To comply with the recommendations from the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) for Best Practice Peer Review, Dr Mary Pierce will now step down from her position as Trustee, however, she will continue to act as Chairman for the Research Selection Committee.

On the 20th June the annual general meeting took place for The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation.  Professor David Owens and Anne Felton step down from the committee. At the same meeting a new chairman for the Foundation - Professor Des Johnson - was appointed.

Professor David Owens and Anne Felton have both served on the Board of Trustees since its inception back in 1996.  Professor David Owens has served as Chairman since 1996.  We would like to express our sincere thanks for all the support given by David and Anne over may years. Anne Felton will remain the Chairman of the Nurse & Allied Healthcare Professional Selection Committee.

The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation are delighted to announce that Professor Des Johnston, Imperial College, London, has accepted the position as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.  Professor Johnston has played a very active role over many years with the Foundation both as a Trustee and as a member of the Research Selection Committee and previous chair of the Grant Committee.  His wide experience will allow Professor Johnston to take over with immediate effect and will serve until 2013, we would like to welcome him in his new role.

The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation has partner status with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). This means that the research supported by the Foundation meets predefined criteria such as independent peer review and is likely to yield benefits in terms of patient care and management. Therefore Research projects funded by the Foundation will be automatically adopted on to the NIHR portfolio of studies. By including studies in the NIHR portfolio researchers have access to the resources of the Clinical Research Networks including training and support and also the possibility to access research nurses and administrative staff as deemed necessary.

The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation, established in 1996, as a charity to support researchers in the field of diabetes.  Funding is available on a competitive basis for clinicians working in diabetes including adult services, general practice and paediatrics, nurses and allied healthcare professionals.  We are now inviting applications for the 2011 awards:

Research Fellowship awards for clinicians and nurses:

  • Clinical research fellowships in primary and secondary care (up to 3 years duration, part time considered) to support work towards PhD or MD (up to 3 fellowships available)

Grant awards for doctors, nurses and basic scientists:

  • Small research project grants up to £10,000 (up to 3 awards available)

Fund awards for nurses and allied healthcare professionals:

  • A course of study up to £2,000 (up to 5 awards)
  • Small clinical project up to £2,000 (up to 3 awards)
  • Attendance at a national or international meeting up to £1,000 (up to 5 awards)
