The Foundation offers Primary Care Research Fellowships of maximum 3 year duration (although part time fellowships of longer duration will be considered) for clinical research in diabetes. These fellowships will be particularly suitable for doctors with MRCGP or MRCP and are currently training and wish to pursue a career in general practice and who have a particular interest in diabetes. For the succesful applicant the Foundation will pay the salary of the fellow based on a middle grade registrar or equivalent plus consumables (maximum £6,000 per annum or pro rata for part time applications). Training and support can be provided and support for attendance at national and international confrerences can also be provided.
Guidelines
Fellowships are intended for doctors in the early stages of their primary care career. Fellows will be expected to register for a higher degree (MD or PhD). Research fellows with more than 1 year (or equivalent part time) should not apply.
During the period of the fellowship the recepient will be expected to be supernumery if the award is on a full time basis. Applications for part time funding should clearly state the amount of time (%) for which the fellowship is required, the source of remaining funding and the commitments that the fellow will be expected to undertake during their other duties.
The amount grant awarded per fellowship includes the salary plus 5% added to the basic amount. Superannuation up to a maximum of 15% will also be reimbursed. An allowance of £6000 per annum (or pro rata) for consumables can also be provided. Details should be specified in the application. Sources of any additional funding for consumables should be specified in the application. As a registered charity the foundation will not fund institutional overheads, applicants should look elsewhere to fund any such requirements.
The foundation will support the fellow to attend relevant academic and educational meetings such as Diabetes UK or Primary Care Diabetes Society to present results eminating from the research project.
The foundation will provide training and support which the fellow will be expected to attend.
The Foundation will only accept one application per practice or department.
For each successful application an up to date cv of the appointed fellow should be forwarded to the chairman of the Board of Trustees before the fellowship commences.

Conditions
Research Fellowships are awarded by the Trustees of The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation following evaluation by a Selection Board comprising specialists in diabetes. Applications are evaluated with respect to the scientific merit as well as the elements of supervision and training provided for the Fellow.
The Research Fellowships are awarded for the purpose stated in the notification from the Board. The grant agreed, unless stated otherwise, is based on the application. The initial Fellowship is for one year, which can be extended up to maximum 3 years full time or 5 years part time based on the annual progress reports submitted to the Chairman of the Board. Dates for submission of reports will be agreed with each Fellow and Supervisor. Funds cannot be used in any way other than as salary for the Fellow and as consumable allowance in support of the research project. If the full amount of the grant is not used in the course of the project, the balance must be returned to the Foundation. It is important to note that funding of the salary of the fellow does not constitute a contract of employment with the fellow and that the Fellowship is an award given by the Foundation to the supervisor (who can apply for an award without having identified a suitable candidate).
On completion of the Research Fellowship a thesis must be submitted to the board along with a detailed financial statement must be submitted to the Board to include a full audited financial statement. The Fellow is also expected to present their research findings at the annual award dinner and at the biennial Novo Nordisk Research Foundation Symposium.
The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation will provide the Fellows with a number of training opportunities, attendance at which is obligatory.
Research Fellows are expected to register for a higher degree (MSc, MD).
In all relevant publications a statement acknowledging support of The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation should be included.
