Research Fellowship

The Foundation offers a full-time fellowship of a maximum of 3 years duration, for clinical research in diabetes i.e. not animal or laboratory research on its own.  This fellowship will be particularly appropriate for specialist registrars who have MRCP and are currently training and wishing to pursue a career in diabetes and endocrinology. Research Fellowships (full or part-time) are also available for General Practitioners (GPs), and nurses.  For the successful applicant the Foundation will pay the salary of the Fellow, based on a middle grade registrar for specialist registrar and GPs, and at a similar level for nurses, plus consumables.  Training and support is given and additional funding for attendance to professional conferences is also available.

Guidelines

  • Fellowships are intended for doctors in the early stages of their specialist careers.  This fellowship intended to result in an MD or a PhD. People who  hold an MD or PhD or have done more than 1 year’s research already need not apply.
  • During the period of the Fellowship, recipients are expected to be supernumerary and not to participate in regular on call duties.
  • The amount of grant awarded per Fellowship includes the salary (see above) with a 5% added to the basic salary.  Superannuation (max. 15%) will also be reimbursed.  An allowance for consumables of up to £6,000 per annum will also be provided.   If consumables exceed the awarded allowance, this must be documented in the application but no additional funding will be available from the Foundation.  No institutional overheads will be paid as the Foundation is a Registered Charity.
  • The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation will provide the Fellows with a number of training courses, attendance at which is obligatory.
  • Support will also be provided for the Fellow to attend the annual DUK meetings and the EASD/IDF/ADA to present the results emanating from the research project either as an oral or poster presentation.
  • Only one application will be accepted from any one department or unit.
  • In each successful application, the CV of the Fellow to be appointed must be forwarded to the Chairman of the Board for approval before the Fellowship is commenced.
  • Fellows and their supervisors will attend the annual research meeting and dinner at Novo.
  • Regular reports on progress are to be provided by the supervisor, and a copy of the final MD or PhD

Conditions

Research Fellowships are awarded by the Trustees of The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation following evaluation by a Selection Board comprising specialists in diabetes.  Applications are evaluated with respect to the scientific merit as well as the elements of supervision and training provided for the Fellow.

The Research Fellowships are awarded for the purpose stated in the notification from the Board.  The grant agreed, unless stated otherwise, is based on the application.  The initial Fellowship is for one year, which can be extended up to three years based on the annual progress reports submitted to the Chairman of the Board. Dates for submission of reports will be agreed with each Fellow and Supervisor.  Funds cannot be used in any way other than as salary for the Fellow and as consumable allowance in support of the research project.  If the full amount of the grant is not used in the course of the project, the balance must be returned to the Foundation.  It is important to note that funding of the salary of the fellow does not constitute a contract of employment with the fellow and that the Fellowship is an award given by the Foundation to the supervisor (who can apply for an award without having identified a suitable candidate).

On completion of the Research Fellowship a detailed report must be submitted to the Board to include a full audited financial statement and a bound copy of the final MD or PhD provided.  The Fellow and his/her supervisor are also expected to present their research findings at the annual award dinner and at the biennial Novo Nordisk Research Foundation Symposium.

The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation will provide the Fellows with a number of training opportunities, attendance at which is obligatory.

Research Fellows are also expected to participate in the Diabetes UK medical and scientific meetings every year   and any Foundation meetings/symposiums. Expenses will be provided. Research Fellows are also encouraged to present their results at an international diabetes meeting each year.

Research Fellows are expected to register for a higher degree (PhD MD).

In all relevant publications a statement acknowledging support of The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation should be included.
